| Obituary | May 26, 2011 | OBITUARY: John D. Wood of Winthrop died at the Massachusetts General Hospital on May 23. He was 90 years old. A longtime resident of Winthrop and a graduate of Malden Schools, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks #1078, the Winthrop Historical and Improvement Association and a member of the Carpenters Union- Local 218. He was also a regular parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was a ships carpenter at the former Boston Naval Shipyard. He was the beloved husband of the late Freda (Fotenakes) Wood; cherished son of the late John J. and Mary Kay (Dwyer) Wood; dear brother and brother- in-law of Edwin L. Wood and his wife, Carol, of Malden, Irene M. Wood of Melrose, Oleda T. Dady and her husband, Charles, of Reading, Frances Mitchell and her late husband, Joseph, of Merrimack, NH, the late Raymond F. Wood and his wife, Virginia, of Stoneham, the late Bernard G. Wood and his late wife, Mary, the late Vincent Wood and his late wife, Pauline, and the late Nelson J. Wood and his wife, Barbara, of Ashland. He was the brotherin-law of George C. Fontaine of Florida, Stella McGettigan of Philadelphia, PA, and Angeline Powell of Winthrop and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.Local entertainment His Funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Friday at 10:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited.
