| Obituary | Feb 17, 2014 | OBITUARY: Irene M. Wood, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, at the age of 91. Irene was born on September 9, 1922 in Chelsea, one of nine children of the late John J. Wood, and Mary K. (Dwyer) Wood. She was raised in Malden, and graduated from the Cheverus School in Malden. At age 21, she enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served her country from 1944 to 1946 in the Hospital Corps during WWII. She received her Medical Secretary Degree from Fisher College in Boston, Class of 1948. Before graduating, she worked in Boston as a hairdresser for several years. Irene worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the Department of Public Health, and later for many years in the Department of Building & Construction. Family was paramount to Irene. She cherished the time she spent with her eight brothers and sisters, gathering for holidays and birthdays. She was also devoted to her parents and became their caretaker as they grew older. An adventurous traveler, Irene vacationed with friends and family to destinations including Russia, Ireland, England, and Egypt. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and had a special liking for historical books. She was known for her great memory, and for generations was the keeper of the Wood family history. Irene was a communicant at St. Mary's Parish in Melrose for many years, and a member of the Ladies Sodality. Irene was the cherished sister of Oleda T. Dady and her late husband Charles of Reading, Frances M. Mitchell and her late husband Joseph of Merrimack, NH, Edwin L. Wood and his wife Carol of Malden, and the late John D. "Jack" Wood and his wife Freda, Raymond Wood and his wife Virginia of Stoneham, Vincent Wood and his wife Pauline, Bernard Wood and his wife Mary, and Nelson J. Wood and his wife Barbara of Ashland. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews. Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Irene's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, February 20 from 4-8PM, and again on Friday morning at 9AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10AM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
