Obituary | Jan 26, 2003 | OBITUARY: SAN DIEGO, CA--- Thurman Benjamin Rountree Jr., 77, a native of Gates County, died Nov. 16, 2002 at Silverado Healthcare Center in Escondido, Ca. Rountree was the son of the late Thurman B. Rountree Sr. and Ica Rice Rountree. Rountree was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific (Philippines) as a Seabee. After his tour of duty he returned home where he began work at the Naval Air Rework Facility. He was a former member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church and Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. He was also a member of the 32nd degree of Mason's Brotherhood. Survivors include his wife Mary T. Rountree; three children, Alvin T. Rountree of Cross Junction, Va; Alma Rae Toxey of Virginia Beach and Elaine K. Benjamin of Virginia Beach; one sister, Evelyn Lassiter of Sunbury; three brothers, Robert Howard Rountree, of Graham, NC, Harry Lee Rountree of Virginia Beach and Ralph Marion Rountree of Williamsburg, Va; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; any many nieces and nephews and friends. In keeping with his wishes, his ashes were scattered off Mission Bay, San Diego, California. Arrangements completed by Telophase Cremation Society, San Marcos, California. Thurman B. Rountree Jr. has left many cherished memories for those who loved and cared for him. He will be missed and remembered well by all who knew him. Memorial donations may be given to a favorite charity.
