| Obituary | Feb 8, 2013 | OBITUARY: PITTSFORD - Ralph Thomas "Tommy" Garrow, 75, of Pittsford, died Thursday February 7, 2013, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. The son of Frank and Rena (Baccei) Garrow, Tommy was born in Rutland April 3, 1937, on the same day and in the same hospital as his wife of 55 years, Marie (Savery) Garrow, whom he married on October 26, 1957, at St. Peter Church. Growing up, Tommy attended MSJ Class of '56, and began boxing at an early age, becoming a Silver Mitten Champion and later a Golden Glove Champion. On entering the Marines during the time of the Korean War, he was chosen to be a member of the Marine Corps boxing team headquartered in Quantico, Va., that traveled all over the country. Upon leaving the service, Tommy moved to Claremont, N.H., where he began a professional boxing career, becoming the New England Champion, and started his lifelong profession as a meat cutter. He also became the flagman at Claremont Speedway and was a proud member of the Claremont Volunteer Fire Department. Tommy would then move back to his hometown of Rutland, opening his own meat market/grocery store on State Street. Soon after his return, he fed his passion for boxing by forming and coaching an amateur team, turning many local fighters into Vermont state and New England champions. Tommy won several coaching awards but, more importantly, created a bond and friendship with his fighters that will live on long after he's gone. His dedication and theirs helped make the Rutland team one of the most successful in the state's Golden Glove history. Surviving are his wife, Marie of Pittsford; one son, Mark T. Garrow of Lexington, N.C; three daughters, Kim Garrow of Portland, Ore., Lisa Kebalka of Claremont, N.H., and Jeanie Magoon of Pittsford; along with six grandchildren, Lucas Magoon, Derek Kebalka, Breanna Garrow, Alec Kebalka, Marissa Garrow and Ashtyn Kebalka. He is also survived by three brothers, Edward Garrow of Proctor, Gerald Garrow of Rutland and James Garrow of Austin, Texas; one sister, Irene Fridinger of York, Pa; nieces, nephews; and his godchildren, E. Conrad Garrow and Christine Garrow Rikhy. Tommy was predeceased by two brothers, Gene Garrow and Paul Garrow, and by two sisters, Beverly Velett and Eleanor Corbett. He was a member of St. Peter Church, American Legion Post #31 and VFW Post #648. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Church in Rutland with a reception held immediately following at the American Legion. Burial will take place later this spring in East Clarendon Cemetery. Tommy's family would like to thank the staff at ICU Rutland Regional Medical Center for the exceptional care they provided.
