Obituary | Jan 19, 2016 | OBITUARY: SHELDON SPRINGS – Shirley Mae Cantell, age 83, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. She was born in Franklin on February 3, 1932 to the late Gordon Messier and Freda (Clapper) Tatro. Shirley graduated from B.F.A. St. Albans class of 1950. She married the love of her life, Richard Cantell on February 14, 1953. Shirley loved spending time outdoors; her favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, cross country skiing and spending time at camp on Fairfield Pond. She also had a passion for horseback riding. She loved her Morgan horse “Josh”. Shirley was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sheldon Springs. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Richard Cantell of Sheldon Springs; 3 children, Cathy Longley and her partner Jack Medeiros, Kimberlee Spaulding and her husband Hubert all of Sheldon and Michael Cantell and his wife Victoria of Franklin; her grandchildren, Stacie Manchester and her partner Brad Bates, Pamela Callan and her husband Tom, Keith Spaulding, Kevin Spaulding and his partner Kim Ploof, Michelle Ogle and her husband Jerry and Miles Trudell and his wife Dana; 15 great grandchildren; 3 siblings, Jimmy Messier and his wife Greta of Sheldon Springs, Eunice Benham of St. Albans and Janet Harris of South Carolina and several nieces & nephews. Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her step-father, Lynford Tatro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Mill St., Sheldon Springs with Fr. Karl Hahr officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Association, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478 or to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, P.O.
