In 1916 or 1917 he went to Canada to join the Americans flyers for the French and was forced to use a pistol to return fire as they had not been able to fire their machine gun through the propellors. He joined the American forces as a motorcycle dispatch rider for General Pershing.

He also changed his date of birth from 21 Dec 1900 to 3 dec 1899 so he could enter WW1.4
