Obituary | Apr 8, 2005 | OBITUARY: ENOSBURG FALLS / EAST MONTPELIER - Carmi J. Duso, age 101, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Haven Health Care Facility in St. Albans. He was born Nov. 22, 1903, in Enosburg Falls, the son of the late Henry and Lena (Benoit) Duso. Carmi was a resident of Enosburg Falls until 1969, at which time he moved to East Montpelier and lived there until 2004. He moved back to Enosburg Falls, ands made his home at the Brownway residence. He was employed at New England Telephone for 42 years, retiring in 1969, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. All of his life, Carmi was very active and involved in many community groups and organizations; member of the Enosburgh Fire Dept. serving as Chief for 24 years, member and past president of the Franklin County Fire Fighters Assoc., member and past president of the Vermont State Fire Fighters, Assoc., member and past president of the Vermont State Fire Chiefs Assoc., member and past president of the New England Fire Chiefs Assoc., charter member and past president of the Enosburg Falls Lions Club, which he was very involved with the June Dairy Festival, Director of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Order of the Arrow Award for adult leadership, member of the Vermont Snow Travelers Association (VAST) for which he served as executive director for 20 years from 1972 to 1992 and served as their lobbyist to the Vermont Legislature. He was also very instrumental in securing the current trail system throughout Vermont. Snowmobilers honored him with the Iron Dog Brigade Award in 1986. He was also a member of the International Snowmobile Congress. He enjoyed hunting, golf, tennis, photography, snowmobiling and skiing. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Ovitt) Duso of East Montpelier; his children, Ronald Duso and his wife Shirley of Enosburg Falls, and Elsie Corey and her husband Charles of Blaine, Minn; his stepchildren, Robert Lumnah and his wife Nancy of Kingston, N.H., James Dudley and his wife Faith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Barbara Hayes of Enosburg Falls, and Charlene McIntire and her husband Jonathan of Longwood, Fla; one brother, Jackson Duso and his wife Kay of Cow Island, N.H; two sisters, Helen Rainault of Williston, and Pearl Sterling of Louisiana; numerous grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Bertha (Haire) Duso; his second wife, Hilda (Lumnah) Duso; and his siblings, Earl, Eula, Mary and Walter. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, April 10, at 2 p.m. at the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church, with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Interment will follow in the West Enosburg Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
