Jacob ran a small farm but worked out much of the time. At the time of his son's birth in 1850, according to vital records of Reading, Massachusetts, United States Jacob's occupation was listed as a cordwainer. In the summer he would assist neighboring farmers and in the winter he would "peg" boots in the little boot shop of his brother, Oliver Parker Jr. Oliver Jr. believed in "hand sewn" boots over those made on the new shoe pegging machines.
