Obituary | Aug 1, 2004 | OBITUARY: THE VILLAGES, FL - Richard L. Cantell, 81, of 3300 Elgin Street, The Villages, FL passed away July 15th after a lengthy illness. He was born on May 21, 1923 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of the late Luther and Veronica (Tatro) Cantell. He lived most of his life in Westfield, Massachusetts. After 1988, he wintered in St. Croix, USVI and summered in Newfound Lake, New Hampshire. In 2001, he moved to Florida. Mr. Cantell was the owner of Cantell's Supermarket,President of Food Basket Stores and Mini Food Basket, Inc. He was on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Grocery Store Owners and the Massachusetts Convenience Store Owners. He was a trustee and member of the Boartd of Investments of Woronoco Savings Bank from 1972 to 1988. He was past president of the Westfield Riding Club and on the Board of Directors of the Westfield Athenaeum, as well as a member of the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club. He was past president of the Westfield Chamber of Commerce. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. He leaves his wife, Hope Cantell, and seven children: his daughters Claudia Cantell of Edmond, OK; Mary Beth Cantell of Norwood, Mass; Pamela Cantell of Westfield; Lynn Cantell of Shelburne Falls, MA; Jean Conderino of Denver, CO; his sons William Cantell of Brimfield, MA; Steven Cantell of Adairsville, GA; three step-daughters Cynthia Button of Northampton, MA; Donna Livernois of Westford, MA; Andrea Moller of Westfield; his sister, Ludella Howe of Blandford, MA; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Robert and sister Berniece Mitchell. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Villages for Hospice, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, Florida 32162.
