Book Excerpt* 
Mr. Newcomb had five sons in the Confederate Army, two of whom died during the Civil War. He was a farmer and one of the most extensive fish traders on the southern coast of James River; a very industrious man; successful in business and owned many slaves. He died at his residence and was buried beside his wife on the premises. His residence was called "Washington" and is said to be the first settlement of the Newcomb family in Prince George Co., Va., in the 18th century, having been the home of his father, Capt. Elisha Newcomb.3
