ObituaryAug 25, 2009  OBITUARY: MANCHESTER -- Martha Jane Aldrich, 81, died Aug. 23, 2009, at Concord Community Hospice House surrounded by her family and after a brave struggle with brain cancer.

Mrs. Aldrich was born June 2, 1928, in Newbury, Vt., the daughter of James H. and Kathleen (McGee) Cookman.

She graduated from Newbury High School in 1946 and moved to Manchester, where she worked as a librarian at the Manchester Public Library.

In 1947, she fell in love and married 1st Lt. Richard C. Aldrich of Sugar Hill. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on July 26.

Mrs. Aldrich worked several years as a pharmacy technician and was active in the community as a Red Cross nurse's aide, a Brownie leader and a PTA mother. She was a VA Hospital volunteer at Elliot Hospital for 33 years, and a member of the First Congregational Church, where she was a lay minister for 10 years and served on the board of the women's union.

IN HER LIFE: Mrs. Aldrich collected antique furniture and fine glassware. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking. No one could surpass her apple pies. She most loved visiting with her friends over cards or scrabble, and she and husband had many happy years of square dancing with Heel and Toe.

Her family, in addition to her husband, of Manchester, includes three daughters, Linda Aldrich and husband, David Miller, of South Newfane, Vt., Wanda Rae Aldrich and partner, Michael Hoy, of Lincoln, Neb., and Lee-Anne Weston and her husband, David Weston, of Prescott, Ariz; three grandchildren, Maggie Kathleen Weston, Jenna Victoria Weston and Clifton Kang Weston, all of Prescott, Ariz; and nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Calling hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday in Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St. The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday in First Congregational Church, 508 Union St. The Rev. Stephen Washburn and Barbara Brawley will officiate.
