Obituary | Nov 2, 2004 | OBITUARY: Baxter Jefferson Rountrey, 94, of 2206 Beverly Heights, Altavista, died on November 1, 2004, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Gladys “Toots” Morgan Rountrey. Born April 10, 1910 in Norfolk, he was a son of the late Simeon Baxter Rountrey and Mamie Gates Rountrey. He was a member of Altavista Presbyterian Church and the Altavista Rotary Club, and a former member of the Altavista Volunteer Fire Department. Baxter was the founder of Rountrey’s Hardware, Inc. He is survived by one son, Hugh Wesley Rountrey and his companion, Joann Midkiff, who Mr. Rountrey thought of as a daughter, of the residence; one daughter, Julie Anne Rountrey and her companion, Tito Ramos, who Mr. Rountrey also thought the world of, both of Altavista; special caring friends, Becky and Gil Cothran; and a special caregiver, Arlene Davis. He was preceded in death by two children, Baxter Jefferson Rountrey, Jr. and Mary Morgan Rountrey; and three brothers, Edward, William, and Vernon Rountrey. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2004, at Green Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Ralph Hawkins. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Finch & Finch, Inc. Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista.
