Edith was born on August 27, 1921, to Maxwell and Ella (Southwick) Shangraw. She was born and raised in Franklin, Massachusetts, where she also met and married her husband, Herbert C. Stewart, Jr., on March 28, 1942. They later retired to Crystal River, Florida. Edith moved to Dublin, Texas, in 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband on November 24, 1999.

She was a member of The Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet E. Recke of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Dr. Donald C. Stewart, DC and wife, Lois, of Dublin, Texas; grandchildren, Robyn D. White and Daniel J. Stewart.
