Obituary | Feb 13, 1903 | OBITUARY: Civil War Union Veteran. Charles moved to Janesville as a young boy with his parents. During the Civil War, Mr. Bowles distinguished himself for brave service in defense of the stars and stripes. He enlisted under Captain Miles in Co. E., Twenty-Second Wisconsin Volunteers, leaving this city for the front in September, 1862. In March 1863, his regiment was taken prisoner and the men were confined a time In LIbby Prison. He was wounded in the face in a battle at Dallas Georgia in 1864 and later was commissioned second lieutenant in the Forty-Second Wisconsin, serving until the close of the war. He was a brave soldier, winning the admiration and respect of his comrades by his dauntless courage and his faithfulness to his duty. Mr. Bowles had many offices of public trust in the city and in the county. He was elected registeror. In 1872, served as clerk of the board of education, was postmaster during the four years of President Harrison's administration and had been a member of the county board of supervisors for several years. He was a member of the board at the time of his death. When not engaged with, public duties, he was in the real estate business. His general efficiency being manifested both in his private and public life- Devoted To Home. On the fourth of August 1868, he was united in marriage with Jennie A. Whiffen.
