ObituaryJan 16, 1998  OBITUARY: Ruby U. Rountree, 75, of Route 1, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.
Mrs. Rountree was a native and lifelong resident of Gates County, N.C. She retired after 35 years from the North Carolina Department of Forestry as a tower operator. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Merrill Rountree; a daughter, Paige R. Pierce of Ahoskie; two sons, Tim H. Rountree and his wife, Barbara, of Franklin, Eddie M. Rountree and his wife, Sue, of Hobbsville; a granddaughter, Tammy A. Rountree, and a grandson, James E. Pierce; seven step-grandchildren, Randy Lockley, Terry Lockley, Frankie Hasty, Travis Hasty, Anita Butler, Chris Gritz, Bryan Gritz; 11 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Norene Taylor of Gates, N.C., Cordis Dudley of Chesapeake, Lois Lawrence of Suffolk, Marion Spivey of Gatesville, Faye Hoffler of Sunbury, and Alta Gray of Longwood, Fla; four brothers, Ralph Umphlett of Manteo, N.C., Randolph Umphlett, Leon Umphlett and M.Q. Umphlett, all of Gates. She was predeceased by two brothers, Milton Umphlett and James Umphlett.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Parr. Interment will follow in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Gates County Rescue Squad or the Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
