Obituary | May 7, 2013 | OBITUARY: LUDLOW - Bernice M. Van Guilder, 93, formerly of Ludlow, passed away on May 5, 2013, at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, N.H. Bernice was born on December 8, 1919, in Cavendish, VT, daughter of Bertie Preston and Iva Putnam. She attended school in Cavendish. After school, she went to work on her father's farm where she met her husband, Herbert M. Van Guilder. They were married in Ludlow, VT, on May 24, 1937. After raising her six children, Bernice worked for Bill Lannon and Ralph Hogancamp in the restaurant business in Ludlow for many years. She was well known for her delicious pies, especially her apple pies. She enjoyed cooking, selling poppies, dancing, flea marketing, berry picking, family, friends and being with people. Her greatest joy was time spent with her grandchildren. Bernice and her husband retired to Florida for winters until he passed away in 1997, at which time she returned to Vermont. She has been living for the past 7 years at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, N.H. She was a lifetime member of Ballard Hobart Auxiliary Unit #36, and a member of Women of the Moose. During her years in the Auxiliary, she was given a special member award for her many years of service. Bernice is survived by her two sons, Herbert B. Van Guilder and his wife Sandra of Ludlow, VT, and David Van Guilder of Ludlow; three daughters, Wilma "Willy" Barrett and her husband Peter of Westminster, VT, Dorothy Harris and her husband Roger of Rutland, VT, and Barbara Goodell of Springfield, VT. She is survived by 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert M. Van Guilder in 1997, and her daughter, Elsie V. Langlais April 5, 2012. At Bernice's request, there will be no calling hours. The graveside committal service and interment will be held at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Ludlow, VT, at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, with the Rev. Harpster officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maplewood Nursing Home in memory of Bernice Van Guilder, 201 River Road, Westmoreland, NH 03467; Hospice at HCS in Memory of Bernice Van Guilder, PO Box 564, 312 Marlboro Street, Keene NH 03431; or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the Maplewood Nursing Home staff for the wonderful care she received while a patient there.
