Obituary | Aug 12, 2004 | OBITUARY: BRATTLEBORO -- George "Jack" Ellis Phelps Sr., 53, of Brattleboro, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after living a full and courageous life battling Muscular Dystrophy. He was surrounded by his family and friends at the time of his death. He was born Nov. 18, 1950, the son of Ernest and Mildred (Cramer) Phelps Sr. in Bellows Falls. He was a graduate with the class of 1970 from Brattleboro Union High School. Many may remember him and his electric wheelchair strolling the streets of Brattleboro, or just visiting with anyone who wanted to stop and chat. He touched many lives and was loved by all those who knew him. He is survived by his wife of over 32 years, Tammy (Howe) Phelps; a son, George Phelps Jr. of Brattleboro; a daughter, Angelina Star Phelps, also of Brattleboro; a sister, Joyce Kathan of Brattleboro; two grandsons, Dominic Ellis Phelps and Tanner Scott Phelps; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by two sisters, Judith Stockwell and Geraldine Hardin; and a brother, Ernest Phelps Jr. Funeral services for Mr. Phelps will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home. The Rev. Arthur Miller of the Vernon Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Putney. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions in Mr. Phelps' memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. A special thanks to the third floor nurses at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Dr. Martina Sczesny, and especially to Dr. Robert Tortolani, friend and physician.
