ObituaryAug 12, 2010  OBITUARY: Anthony J. (Tony) Michel, 79, of Rutland, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010 in Rutland Regional Medical Center.was born Nov. 23, 1930 in Richford, the son of Thomas and Sadie (Joseph) Michel. He graduated from Richford High School in 1948 and then joined the Marine Corps.

On Oct. 2, 1954, he married Sabra (Leach) Michel. After graduating from St. Michael's College in 1956, he served in the U.S. Army until 1959 and received his pilots wings from the Army Aviation Program.

He was employed by General Motors Acceptance Corp., covering Vermont and New Hampshire from 1959 to 1963.1963, he joined the Miller Automobile Company in White River Junction as general manager. He later became general manager for Val Preda's Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Pontiac dealership in Burlington for two years. In 1980, he became part owner of Miller Auto, which owned Max Chevrolet-AMC-Jeep-Eagle in Springfield. In 1984, he became full owner and the business became Michel's Chevrolet-Buick-AMC-Jeep-Eagle. He bought Rutland Dodge, Saab & Volvo in 1988. The dealership became Automobile International Corp. and the Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Isuzu and Hyundai franchises were added.

Tony retired in 1997, and he and Sabra spent their winters at their home in Fort Myers, Fla.

He served on the board of directors of the First Twin State Bank in White River Junction and on the United Vermont Bank in Rutland. He was a member of the Elks Club and a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post # 31.include his daughter, Celeste Michel and her husband, Gene Hathaway, and their children, Courtney and Kurt of Rutland; and his son, A.J. Michel II and his wife, Jill (Sabataso) Michel, and their children, John and Julia Sabra. He is also survived by his sister, Teresa and her husband, Arthur Larivee, of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sabra Leach Michel on April 8, 2008; and by his brother, Paul Michel, in 2004.
honor of his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A private burial in Evergreen Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

A celebration of Tony and Sabra's life for family and friends will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 at 12 p.m. at the Palms Restaurant in Rutland.
