Mrs. Truland was born in Bridgeport CT on October 21, 1930, the daughter of Raymond and Vivian (Moran) Moulton. She was the widow of Daniel J. Truland, who predeceased her in 2007. Shirley was a longtime nurse and worked at Weeks Memorial Hospital and Kent Nursing Home, both in Lancaster. She also worked as a private-duty nurse. Her hobbies included making baskets and quilts. She also had a love for animals and enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels and was always taking care of stray animals.

Family members include her sons Kevin Truland and wife Colleen of Lancaster, Bruce Truland and wife Yao of Lancaster, Earl Truland and wife Sharon of Riverhead NY, and Alan Truland of Dalton NH; daughters Lynnette Siteman and husband Frank of Winchester MA, Maureen Rainault and husband Gil of Guildhall VT, and Kathy Truland of Lancaster; grandchildren Jacob Cote and wife Lindsay, Jonathan Ingerson, Jason Truland and wife Kelly, Ben Ingerson and wife Koryn, Taylor Ingerson, Jordan Chester and husband Jason, Matt Truland, Jillian Bessette, Tyler Grieves, Genna Truland, and Shirley Patricia Truland; great-granddaughter Lillian Ingerson and two more great-grandchildren to come; brother Fredrick Moulton of Pennsylvania; and sister-in-law Sister Maureen Truland of Clyde.

Her parents and stepmother Hazel Moulton also predeceased her.
