ObituaryMay 14, 2001  OBITUARY: HELEN LEONCA ANAIR, 100, passed away peacefully May 13, 2001. She was born in Newport, VT, April 5, 1901, to George Anair and Carrie Dube Anair. She graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1918, studied the law, and in 1927, she was admitted to the bar and became the tenth female lawyer in Vermont. Helen practiced law and was a successful business woman during an era in which women struggled for equality. Her greatest interests were tracking and recording her family genealogy and memoirs, traveling, gardening and challenging her friends and family to games of Scrabble. She continued to be independent, feisty and vibrant throughout all of her 100 years.

Helen is survived by her sister, Evelyn Anair McCanna, and her sister-in-law, Ellen Thompson Anair, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a greast-grandniece and great-grandnephew. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Muriel and Thurb Hayward, and Velma and Roderick Riley; her brother, Lawrence Anair; and brother-in-law, George McCanna. Helen’s family would like to thank the staff and residents of the Converse Home for their loving care and friendship over the six years Helen resided in their presence. In addition, they are thankful for the care she received from the many doctors and nurses on Baird 4 who looked after her the last week of her life.

Prayers and committal will be June 10 at 12:30 at Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick. A memorial mass will be conducted the following day at St. Norbert’s Church in Hardwick.
