Obituary | Feb 25, 2013 | OBITUARY: Woodstock, VT - FAYE AMBROSE DUDLEY Faye passed away at the Merten's House in Woodstock, VT, Sunday evening, February 24, after a long struggle with Alzheimer s Disease. Faye was born December 26, 1930, to Irene (Clark) Ambrose and Harrison R. Ambrose in Woodstock, Vermont. She attended school in Woodstock, and worked at the Norman Williams Public Library under the mentorship of Miss Alice Eaton and Mrs. Vivian Bates. She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1948 with a full four-year scholarship to UVM. Wanting to become a teacher, she attended the UVM for one year. On September 10, 1949 Faye married Winston Bruce Dudley, the son of Beatrice (McGoff) Dudley & Eugene P. Dudley. They settled in Woodstock for most of their married life, moving to a new home in Quechee in 1999. They had the good fortune to share 63 wonderful years together and having the joy of raising two daughters and one son and also spending lots of time with five wonderful grandchildren. Faye was a secretary to Attorney Franklin S. Billings, Jr. until she gave birth to her first child Christine on July 4, 1957. A second daughter, Kathryn, arrived on October, 13, 1958; a son, Dane was born on February 28, 1967. As a "stay-at-home" mom, Faye enjoyed spending time with her children, baking cookies, taking walks on Mt. Peg or Mt. Tom, swimming at the Rec Center pool or sledding at Mt. Tom. She took ski lessons in order to help all three children learn to ski. She and "Babe" Piper Morgan were "Ski Runner" volunteers for many years helping teach many Woodstock youngsters. She also helped Rhoda Teagle and Mildred Whitney as a Brownie/Girl Scout leader. She also was an active member of the First Congregational Church and worked on the Glad Rags Sale for many years. After her son was in school, she went back to work for several years for Billings & Sherbume law office, then Preston Cole, Architect, Attorney William B. Emmons, Attorney James Wright, and spent ten years at the local Probate Court. She was a Union High School director, member of the League of Women Voters, Woodstock Ski Runners, Woodstock Country Club, King's Daughters & Sons, Woodstock Job Bank Board and Women of St. James Church. Faye loved reading, listening to music, playing golf, working on crossword puzzles, knitting & crocheting. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many of her two daughters' clothes as well as the outfits for their dolls, too. She passed on many of her skills and love of books to her children. She and Bruce traveled many years to the American Bankers Association & the Vermont Bankers Association annual conventions which took place in different settings. They enjoyed several cruises, one to the Caribbean with Dane and his wife and another to Alaska. When Bruce retired from the Woodstock National Bank, he was given a two-week trip to England and France so they were able to see many historic sites. Faye is survived by her husband of 63 years, W. Bruce Dudley of Woodstock, VT; two daughters, Christine (Dudley) Gilbert and her husband Jim of Brookfield, VT, Kathryn (Dudley) Harrington of Woodstock, VT, a son Bruce Dane Dudley and his wife Sue of Wethersfield, CT, a sister Nancy (Ambrose) Swanson and husband Dick of Randolph, VT, a step-sister Lucille (Carpenter) Tancreti of Hartland, VT. She leaves five grandchildren, Alex Gilbert of Brookfield, VT, Kevin, Jack ç Katie Dudley of Wethersfield, CT and Jessica (Gilbert) Carpenter and husband Nick of So. Royalton, VT. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her three older brothers, Alfred, Harry & Larry Ambrose and step-sister Helen (Carpenter) Wright. A memorial Service will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church, On the Green, Woodstock, VT, Sunday afternoon, March 3, at 2PM. The Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions honoring Faye may be made to the Norman Williams Public Library, 10 the Green, Woodstock, VT 05091, St. James' Church, On the Green, Woodstock, VT 05091, or The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
