ObituaryJan 10, 2017  OBITUARY: Chesapeake - Etheleen Matthews Ward, 91, of 3908 Cannon Point Drive, died Sunday, January 8, 2017 in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.

Mrs. Ward was born in Gates County on January 22, 1925, and was one of seven children of the late John Thomas and Donnie Smith Matthews. A retired data programmer with Dominion Power, she was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of nearly 49 years, Walter A. Ward, Jr; children, Michelle Ward Bunch and husband Bruce of Lorton, VA and Walter A. Ward, III of Raleigh, NC; her sister, Virginia Dare Matthews of Portsmouth; and three grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Sturtevant Funeral Home, 5201 Portsmouth Blvd.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Reynoldson Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Cody Brinkley and the Rev. Jimmy Smith. Friends may join the family in the social hall immediately following the service. The graveside portion of the funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery in Suffolk. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reynoldson Baptist Church, in care of Debbie Smith, 134 Reynoldson Road, Gates, NC 27937, or to a charity of one's choice.
