(2) by 1671 (and probably by 1669) Hannah (Prence) Mayo, daughter of THOMAS PRENCE and widow of Nathaniel Mayo [ MD 14:193-203]; m. (3) Barnstable 23 November 1698 Sarah (Lewis) Cobb, daughter of George Lewis and widow of James Cobb (son of HENRY COBB ) [ MD 14:87;TAG 68:26]. - Great Migration Begins (Richard Sparrow) "Capta Sparrow" is mentioned frequently in the Eastham records as the officiant at weddings. 17th century birth records often do not identify the mother, and other children's births are inferred from documents such as wills and lawsuits. Samuel Freeman; Jonathan b. 9 July 1665, d. 9 Mar 1730/1740, m. Rebecca Merrick. He married (2) about 1669 Hannah (Prence) Mayo; they had three children born at Eastham: Richard b. 17 Mar 1669, died young; Patience d. 25 Oct 1745, m. (1) Joseph Paine, m. (2) John Jenkins; Richard b. 1675?, d. 13 Apr 1728, m. Mercy Cobb. He married (3) 23 November 1698 Sarah (Lewis) Cobb, daughter of George Lewis and widow of James Cobb; they had no children. Jonathan was admitted a freeman June 1663. He was engaged as a schoolmaster in 1665. He was a deacon in the church, and acted as an attorney for townsmen. He left a will, and much land. Jonathan was Deputy for Eastham to the Plymouth General Court 19 terms between 1668 and 1686. Following the Andros usurpation and the union with Massachusetts Bay, he served 8 sessions as Deputy to the Massachusetts General Court between 1689 and 1702. He was a selectman of Eastham at least 10 years between 1671 and 1686, member of the council of war, associate judge or magistrate 1690 and 1691, many years a justice of the peace. He rose from Ensign to Lieutenant 4 October 1675, and in that capacity served in King Philip's War. He was promoted to Captain before 6 June 1677 and that commission was renewed 2 Oct 1689. The will of Jonathan Sparrow of Eastham is dated 10 March 1706/1707, proved 3 April 1707. It names sons John, Jonathan and Richard; grandchildren John and Jonathan Sparrow; 'Brother Joshua Bangs'; three daughters, Rebecka, Lydia and Patience; "my Loving Wife"; residue to three sons and three daughters and the children of Capt Samuel Freeman had by my daughter Elizabeth; Benoni Gray to have an equal part with his uncles and aunts, and William Freeman and Lydia Godfree to have one-half of their mother's part. His estate included a considerable amount of land.2 | |
