| Obituary | Dec 23, 2013 | OBITUARY: "Gusto" George S. Seddon, of Westford, died December 22, 2013, in Westford, after a period of declining health, aged 90 years. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Phyllis (Valentine) Seddon, who died February 5, 2013, and with whom he had shared 64 years of marriage. Born in Rome, NY, October 1, 1923, a son of the late John Thomas and Clara (Sagen) Seddon. He received his early education in the Yonkers, New York school system and graduated from Drake Preparatory School with the Class of 1941. He furthered his education at New York University. Mr. Seddon enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 22, 1943. He served as a Combat Medic with the elite 10th Mountain Division, 604th Field Artillery Battalion, in the North Apennine Mountains of Italy during the attack on Riva Ridge, which lead to the allied advance over Po Valley. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the Bronze Star for saving his commander's life. After proudly serving his country, he worked in the publishing industry until his retirement. Never one to remain idle, George then worked at Market Basket in Westford, where he was known as the "Mayor", for over 20 years. In his younger days, George was an active member of Masons Amicable Lodge, Cambridge Chapter, the Shriners, and the Knights Templar. He was a Past Commander and Sergeant at Arms with the Frederick S. Healy American Legion Post 159 in Graniteville, and a member of the V.F.W. Mattawanakee Post 6539 in Forge Village. He was proud to come from a long line of Salvation Army officers, and devoted much of his life to its ministry. George, along with his beloved Didi, was a huge fan and supporter of Westford's youth sports programs. Famous for running the 50/50 Boosters Club Raffle at "his kids" games, he tirelessly climbed up, down, and across the stands with an endless supply of raffle tickets, stopping only to participate in the Gusto and Pride Cheer. In recognition of their many contributions, George and Phyllis were inducted into the Westford Academy Sports Hall of Fame, and were this year's recipients of the Gordon B. Seavey Appreciation Award. He was a kind, generous person who will always be remembered for his love of family, devotion to his country, and dedication to Westford's youth. The family would like to thank his many friends in the community, including the amazing students and staff of Westford Academy (his "Dream Team"), for the loving care and support they provided over the years, especially during his recent illness. He is survived by two nieces, Ellen Short of Westford, and Pat Seddon of Vermont; two nephews, Jack Seddon and Chris Seddon, both of Maine, and a great-nephew, Douglas Short of Westford. He was the brother of the late John Seddon, and brother-in-law of the late Beth Seddon, Bud Hill and Adeline Hill. Publisher unknown.1 |
