Obituary | Feb 24, 2005 | OBITUARY: SUNBURY - Fred Rea Lassiter, 68, of the 800 block of US 158 E., died Feb. 23, 2005, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. Mr. Lassiter was born in Gates County, N.C. and was the son of the late William Herbert Sr. and Dolna Harrell Lassiter. A farmer, he had retired as the dryer operator in the instant tea dept. of Lipton Tea, Suffolk. A former member, treasurer, deacon and Sunday school superintendent at Middle Swamp Baptist Church, he, in recent years, was a member of Damscus Christian Church where he had served as a trustee. An active member of the Sunbury Ruritan Club, he had served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Hires. Surviving are his wife of more than 47 years, Evelyn Rountree Lassiter; a daughter, Donna Lassiter Moses and husband Kenneth of Greenville, N.C; a son, Steven Rea Lassiter and wife Tammy of Sunbury; grandchildren, Daniel Rea Lassiter, Mary Lynn Lassiter and Hunter Ian Moses; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lassiter of Elizabeth City and Dot Carter of Hobbsville; three brothers, W.H. "Billy" Lassiter Jr. and Johnny Lassiter, both of Sunbury and Edward A. Lassiter of Asheville, N.C; and a cousin who was raised as a brother with his family, Jesse Paul Long of Lexington, S.C. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
